Since the beginning of time there have been individuals who could purportedly heal people just through their intentions. In the modern world, this type of healing is referred to as distance healing. It is a form of therapy and can be defined as some a kind of mental focus that is directed to the restoration of health of an individual who is not within the same room as the sender.

Experiments have shown that intention can affect a person’s body across time and space and that if one is trained in intention with good will, the effect is greatest. Other studies have shown that distance healing can even heal small size tumors.

These techniques are known by a lot of names including intercessory prayer, energy healing, shamanic healing, nonlocal healing, and Reiki. Because this healing is considered nonlocal it actually defies classical physics. Einstein defined this as spooky action at a distance and it does seem that there is a lot of evidence for quantum non-locality.

Rather than pretending that we have all of the answers, the bottom-line is that we don’t know exactly how this stuff works. This has been true for many branches of medicine including drugs such as aspirin. We knew that they worked before we figured out how. We still don’t know how a lot of drugs and medicines worked including general anesthetic but it doesn’t mean that they don’t work.

There are four basic principles of physics that underlie intention and the mechanism behind distance healing that have been described:

  1. The first one is that intention is transmitted by some kind of an unknown energy signal.
  2. The second is that intentions somehow warp space time much like gravity creating pathways for connection.
  3. The third is that people, like particles are described in quantum physics, have instantaneous communication across distance
  4. The fourth is that intention is much like measurement in quantum physics in that it organizes random possibilities such as how multiple functions can be collapsed into a single function.

One of the quantum behaviors that is known to modern physicist is non-locality. Non-locality describes how two particles separated in space even by millions of years can act together as if each one knows what the other is doing. For example, when identical twins are studied, there seems to be some kind of an inexplicable connection between them and the bond goes beyond having similar thoughts to situations in which one twin might know at the very instance that the other twin has had a serious accident or has died. This speaks to the concept of non-locality, which is this inexplicable bond between separated particles.

Another term for non-locality would be quantum entanglement, so this is the idea that objects can impact one another at a great distance. The tiny objects can be quanta like electrons and photons, or even a larger matter such as atoms and molecules.

Anthropologists who study cultures around the world have documented that there are non-local connections in consciousness, and that there must be some kind of information exchange between two people or even between groups of people regardless of the separation of time and space.

For example, a link between people and their environment may have saved the lives of the Sentinelese people living on the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean. They were isolated from the rest of the world, and as such they would have perished in the 2004 Asian tsunami. But they all survived because they have moved up to high ground long before the tsunami hit.

No one has ever discovered a signal uniting a healer and the person being healed. Because of this, the theories about distant healing really resemble some kind of psychic event such as telepathy or clairvoyance.

As Dr. Larry Dossey explains: The reason that we don’t know how healing happens is because we have bumped up against the three most mysterious entities in the universe: consciousness, space and time. To really understand distance healing requires penetrating these mysteries which we have been unable to do up until this point.

Many people believe in the power of prayer. So many people consider that praying for the benefit or the improvement in someone’s body to be a very basic form of distance healing. People have been using prayer for thousands of years in order to help the body to balance. The theory here is that we are beings comprised of energy and somehow using prayer helps to boost this energy system.

One distance study was done with blood cells and they found that sending positive energy to the blood cells slowed the rate of cells bursting in a salt solution. So, the hypothesis was that the supportive energy sent to the cells helped to strengthen the cell walls.

In numerous studies, they found that it really doesn’t matter if the person who is sending the positive energy was inches way or thousand miles away from the person receiving. These studies have been repeated with humans, with animals, with plants and with cells themselves. Of course, there are studies that demonstrate that nothing happens. However, it seems that there are many studies that support the results of distance healing.

Another way to think about distant healing is as a form of wireless technology similar to a cellphone that is then transmitting healing through a frequency of intention or awareness. Everything is connected. Everything is part of a continuous whole and as such distance is not a factor, as different forms of energy are all that there is.

Through their research, The PEAR Lab at Princeton University has established that there is an information field which exists and which penetrates all known barriers. It does not weaken with distance. It can go backward and forwards in time and that somehow is able to influence consciousness.

Although distant healing or non-local healing has been around for many many thousands of years the investigation into this field is in its infancy.

As physicist Sir Arthur Eddington said, “something unknown is doing we don’t know what”. Meanwhile therapist and facilitators will continue to direct positive energy from a distance to their clients with noticeable results.
