What’s in a bottle?

We now live in an area which is being blanketed with both aerial and ground spraying of pesticides for mosquitos. And of course, no matter how careful we are, it is pretty much impossible to completely avoid exposure. However, there’s plenty that we can do to help get the pesticides out of our body and to offset their effects.

poisonToxins are becoming a big part of our world. In fact, there is evidence that there is more toxic exposure in the modern world than the human body was designed to process. Eventually, the organs such as the liver and other eliminative organs can become so overloaded that they stop functioning effectively.

Ideally, toxins can be broken down and easily excreted. But when different drugs, vaccines, food additives, and the byproducts of chemicals accumulate in the organs and tissues, they can interfere with the complete breakdown and elimination of the toxins. There are also some additives and pesticides which cannot be recognized by the body. In fact, they’re clogging up the system and are being deposited as storage inside the cells of the arteries, muscles, liver, intestines, and even the heart and the brain.

There are many remedies that can help to clear, cleanse, and detoxify the body and the various body systems. And the good news is that we’re still in summertime here in South Florida and using remedies now can help to drain toxins from the body in this season.

Before we move on to individual remedies, let’s look at a few statistics on chemical contamination:

  • There are approximately 75,000 chemical substances that are currently being used in the United States for commercial purposes
  • The U.S. government is registering about 2,000 newly synthesized chemicals every year.
  • Over 3,000 chemicals are routinely added to food
  • About 5,000 chemical ingredients are used in making different kinds of cosmetics
  • And there are 500 chemicals used as active ingredients in pesticides

So, we can see the evidence that exists: synthetic chemicals are contaminating the environment and affecting humans. Some of the consequences of this chemical contamination include things such as respiratory infections, chronic bronchitis and asthma; cardiovascular disease; nervous system disorders including ADD, ADHD, and Parkinson’s; and also defects and deficiencies in brain function and in the reproductive system.

environment-scienceIn order to deal with this, we have a new field of medicine called environmental medicine, which is exploring the importance of detoxification of the body, purifying the blood, and the concept of something called body burden. Body burden can best be defined as the extent to which humans are contaminated with synthetic chemicals. So, these are chemicals that are found in the air, in the water, on the land, and within the food. And they have entered the human body through inhalation, through the skin, and through ingesting them. What environmental medical doctors are looking at is the quantity of combined exogenous substances that accumulate within an individual. So, the body burden is the result of lifetime exposure to toxic chemicals and the fact that these chemicals have accumulated in fat tissues, in the blood, and even in the organs. They are passed through the body in the form of breast milk, urine, semen, and other excretions.

The detoxification system of the human body is effective at eliminating byproducts, which have arrived there through natural metabolic processes. However, the human body cannot necessarily keep up with the overwhelming accumulation of chemical contaminants. If we’ve been exposed to pesticides, what parts of the body will need cleansing?

DETOXIFICATION SYSTEMS

The different systems in the body, which can release and drain toxins, have membranes through which toxins will exit. So, let’s look at a few of these systems.

Lymphatic System
We have the lymphatic system, which transports toxic substances from cells to the filters within the liver and the kidneys. Some of the symptoms of a lymphatic system that has been affected through chemicals would include things like puffiness under the skin. A lot of times people have swollen face, or chronically swollen lymph nodes, or also some aching in the muscles of the body.

Liver
The liver is attempting to transform toxic substances into water-soluble forms so that they can be excreted. Symptoms of liver dysfunction can include things like bad breath, constipation. There can be breast issues because the liver meridian crisscrosses the breasts, so a lot of sore breasts around menstruation, also inability to digest fats. People with liver toxicity will notice that they might eat a steak for dinner or they might drink a little bit of alcohol and they feel really miserable afterwards. That’s a sign of liver congestion. Also unexplained fatigue.

Kidneys
We have the kidneys, of course, in their role of filtering the blood and the urine through which toxins are excreted. Some symptoms of kidney dysfunction or deficiency can be things like dark circles under the eyes, water retention or any kind of painful or frequent urination or frequent cystitis. Also chronic lower back pain.

Bowels
The bowels are considered an eliminative organ and the walls of the bowels, of the gut, help to protect us from harmful substances entering the surrounding system. Symptoms of bowel insufficiency can be chronic constipation or diarrhea, leaky gut syndrome where toxins are actually flowing back into the bloodstream, also any kind of allergies or food sensitivity as well as poor immune system function.

Lungs
The lungs and the sinuses, in their proper role, are excreting toxins to the outside world. And again, symptoms of malfunction of this system will include chronic lung conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, chronic cough, also chronic sinusitis or breathing issues.

Skin
The skin, of course, excretes toxins through sweat and also through the follicles in the hair. And symptoms that the skin is not able to do this can include things like hair loss and also skin conditions; rosacea, eczema, rashes, acne and excessive sweating.

So, we can see that there are many systems that are involved in cleansing and usually there are 1 or 2 primary systems that must be cleared in order to allow the others to work well. And one general natural therapy that can serve as a strategy in detoxifying all parts of the body including cells, tissues, and organs of the body is working with the blood system. We are talking about working with a blood purification strategy, or using alteratives. So, blood is frequently referred to as the river of life because of its vital lifesaving functions. We know that blood performs 3 major functions: transportation of nutrients, regulation within the body, and protection.

blood-purificationAll of these are important for sustaining good health. In terms of its transportation function, blood is transporting oxygen and nutrients including vitamins and minerals. It is also transporting metabolic waste products: enzymes, hormones, and red and white blood cells. In its regulatory function, blood is helping to maintain body temperature, fluid and electrolyte balance, and the pH balance in the body.

With the immune system, blood is protecting the body from disease and infection through its white blood cells and antibodies. So, in this blood delivery system, blood can also end up transporting toxic chemicals to the cells if that’s what’s in the body. Many times, the body’s systems of elimination are overwhelmed and they’re not able to remove these toxins. So, we want to try to put natural substances in which will help to purify the blood and to assist the body in detoxifying itself.

REMOVING TOXINS

Let’s look at some of the ways in which unwanted toxins can be removed or lessened in the body. The most common sense way of preventing the buildup of toxins is to pursue a general detoxified lifestyle. Here, we’re talking about eating a healthy diet, with as much as organic, GMO-free food as possible. Foods will help to naturally detoxify the body. For example, turmeric helps to lower levels of inflammation. Eating organic brown rice, which is a perfectly neutral food as far as its pH balance, will help to detoxify the body by binding with toxic substances and flushing them out. Green vegetables are a great source of detoxification. Any kind of organic green vegetable is extremely detoxifying and purifying to the body. Drinking pure water, as pure as you can get, is a great body detoxifier.

If we’re looking at removing congested toxins from the different body systems, we can also look at some of the detoxification herbs. One of the best categories of herbal detoxification therapies are the blood purifying herbs called alteratives in Western herbalism. An alterative generally means purifying the blood or cleansing the blood. These botanicals can “alter” the condition of the blood by helping to assimilate the good nutrients and to eliminate metabolic waste products. They also help to neutralize acidic conditions. We’re always hearing about pH balance being acid due to our food choices and the alterative botanicals will help to neutralize this. In general, these plants have a very high in nutritional content.

Alterative Herbs

Alteratives also contain bitters and bitter herbs always help to activate the liver. Let’s take a look at a few:

dandelion-web

DANDELION ROOT
As a primary blood purifier, it has a strong ability to filter toxic chemicals from the bloodstream. Because of its cold and bitter nature, it has special properties that help to promote the health of the liver, which, as we mentioned, is one of the most important eliminative organs in the body. So, dandelion really stimulates the liver directly and helps the secretion of bile into the liver to help to breakdown congestion and help to clear the bile ducts.

burdock-web

BURDOCK ROOT
It’s considered an overall blood purifier and also a blood building herb. As a bitter, it has diuretic and diaphoretic qualities, meaning that it can help to induce sweating, cleansing the body of toxins and wastes. It, too, has a very beneficial effect on the liver.

milk-thistle-web

MILK THISTLE
We can’t discuss medicinal herbs for the liver without mentioning milk thistle. It has shown itself to be a supreme liver detoxifier. There have been many studies where people who have been exposed to different kinds of toxins including industrial toxins were given concentrates of milk thistle with significant benefits to their health. There is also evidence that those who regularly take milk thistle are protected against different kinds of chemically induced cancer, probably due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities.

oregon-grape-web

OREGON GRAPE ROOT
Oregon grape root is another great cleansing herb, removing toxins and other waste products from the blood. It’s also helpful for liver and gallbladder sluggishness and congestion. In addition, it works very well for any kind of skin disorders and it’s even said to have weight loss properties.

So, this is just a brief description of some of the Western alterative detoxifying herbs. Now, let’s move over to the Chinese side of things.

Chinese Herbs

In Chinese medicine, the liver is responsible for cleansing the body of toxic waste products. There are many Chinese tonic herbs that help to encourage the detoxification of the liver and really, the whole body in general, while at the same time improving liver function and helping to nourish the cells.

schisandra-web

SCHISANDRA
This is one of the super tonic herbs in the Chinese adaptogenic category. It’s a berry. We also call it Wu Wei Zi in Chinese medicine. It is a blood purifier that promotes liver health and helps with the regulatory systems in the body. It is primarily a cleansing herb. It is also considered tonic, safely removing toxins from tissues and blood without any kind of negative side effects.

In China, they’ve developed a pharmaceutical in the Chinese medical system called DBD, which is primarily made from the active constituent of Schisandra called Schisandrin. It is used specifically for treating liver disease, hepatitis and to address liver poisoning.

reishi-web

REISHI MUSHROOMS
Reishi or Ganoderma mushrooms are another amazing remedy within the category of a Chinese tonic herb. They have very powerful protective and restorative effects on the liver. Research has shown that the mushrooms actually help to stimulate the regeneration of liver cells. In fact, all mushrooms have very powerful stimulating effects on the immune system.

bupleurum-web

BUPLEURUM
Also called Chai Hu in Chinese medicine, this is probably one of the most widely used liver herbs and a common ingredient in many Chinese formulas. This root is used to cleanse and cool the liver, and it is combined with other blood-building herbs to help to release toxic substances.

homeopathic-web

HOMEOPATHICS
There are a few homeopathic remedies that can help with detoxification if there’s been exposure to pesticides. One of the benefits of working with homeopathy is that you’re working with very, very minute doses of a remedy.

They can be indicated if somebody has an immediate reaction to pesticides, suddenly becoming very weak or breathless or experiencing anxiety. Arsenicum album 30C potency is something that can come in very handy.

For generalized protection from poisoning, then Natrum Muriaticum or Nat Mur 6X is very useful.

With homeopathy, the cells are helped to recognize that what is being held within them are toxins. Once the cell’s innate intelligence is awakened it will signal the toxins to exit through the cell walls into the blood and lymph systems. Since the advent of homeopathy in the 1880s, there are many remedies that are used to clear the system and to drain and detoxify all of the various body systems.

THERE IS HOPE!

So, please don’t be discouraged if you have been exposed to pesticides. There’s a lot that you can do. Eating organic food and using a Western or Chinese herbal protocol, or perhaps, homeopathy, will help to move toxic substances out of the body and restore your beautiful body to health.
